Saint Joseph: Our Spiritual Father

0_FathersDay_1_17su_4c.jpgA happy and blessed Fathers Day! May all who exercise a fatherly role draw from the example, wisdom, patience, love, and strength of the greatest father who ever lived: Saint Joseph. We continue to celebrate through December 8 of this year the Year of Saint Joseph proclaimed by Pope Francis. The Diocese has many resources available to celebrate this year, including the great opportunity to make pilgrimages to the twelve churches in our diocese under the title of Saint Joseph! Visit www.yearofstjosephtoledo.org to see these resources and the locations of the churches under Saint Joseph’s patronage.

On May 1, the Feast of Saint Joseph the Worker, Pope Francis approved seven new titles of Joseph to be inserted into the official Litany of Saint Joseph. These titles are drawn from saints and popes who have reflected on aspects of Joseph as Patron of the Universal Church. These new titles are:

  • Custos Redemptoris (Guardian of the Redeemer): from Saint John Paul II’s apostolic exhortation Redemptoris custos
  • Serve Christi (Servant of Christ): from Saint Paul VI’s homily on the Solemnity of Saint Joseph (March 19, 1966) which is quoted in Redemptoris custos, no. 8, and Patris Corde, n. 1
  • Minister salutis (Minister of Salvation): from Saint John Chrystostom and quoted in Redemptoris custos n. 8
  • Fulcimen in difficultatibus (Guide in Times of Trouble): from Pope Francis in Patris Corde, prologue
  • Patrone exsulum (Patron of Exiles), from Pope Francis in Patris Corde, no. 5
  • Patrone afflictorum (Patron of the Afflicted), from Pope Francis in Patris Corde, no. 5
  • Patrone Pauperum (Patron of the Poor): from Pope Francis in Patris Corde, no. 5

Let us invoke the intercession of Saint Joseph, Patron of the Universal Church every day, but especially on this Father’s Day and each Wednesday (the day devoted to him in the Church). The Litany with the new invocations in bold is below.
