Becoming Catholic

"The joy of the Gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus. Those who accept His offer of salvation are set free from sin, sorrow, inner emptiness, and loneliness. With Christ, joy is constantly born anew!"

- Pope Francis, The Joy of the Gospel

St. Augustine once said, "Our hearts are restless, until they rest in You, O Lord."

God made the heart of each and every human person for Himself, and we will each be restless, seeking fulfillment in the things of the world that can never satisfy, until our hearts rest in Him.

RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) provides a space and time for adults to wrestle with the questions of truth, faith, purpose, and identity in order to discover and encounter the God for whom our hearts were created and in whom we find our rest, our purpose, and our identity. During the RCIA process, adults of all backgrounds and life experiences learn and discuss the truth as revealed by God through the Catholic Church and discern their response to that truth. Participants are invited to respond to God's love and truth with faith, conviction, and dedication of their entire lives to Him through receiving the Sacraments of Initiation and being welcomed into a relationship with Jesus Christ through the Catholic Church.

Who can be a part of the RCIA process? The RCIA process is for adults who are at all different stages of their faith journey but have not yet been initiated (or fully initiated) into the Catholic Church. This includes those who have had no faith upbringing at all and those who have not been baptized, as well as those who have been baptized into another Christian faith or those who were baptized Catholic but were not raised Catholic and have not received any of the other Sacraments of Initiation (Eucharist or Confirmation).

Is there a similar program for children or teens? Yes! There is a process similar to RCIA for children over the age of 7 who are seeking baptism or the completion of their Sacraments of Initiation. The process looks very similar to the adult process, but age-appropriate resources are used and conversations are geared towards current life experiences of young people.

How do I know if I should sign up? God's call looks and sounds different for everyone! If you feel drawn to what you know of the Catholic faith, if you are seeking truth but are not sure where to start, or even if you are just slightly interested in learning more about what Catholics believe, even if you are not sure that you want to become Catholic yourself, you are encouraged to take part in RCIA sessions!

What are RCIA sessions like? Should I feel intimidated if I know nothing about the Catholic faith? Not at all! RCIA sessions are all about meeting people where they are at and helping them to discover truth and encounter the living God, right where they are! Sessions are intentionally laid back and conversation based, so that everyone feels welcome and encouraged to participate fully, no matter their background.
