In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit!

We celebrate the feast of the Holy Trinity with the sign of our faith. It is a wonderful summary of what we believe. We believe that the Father loved the Son with the love of the Holy Spirit and that love brought Jesus into our midst. His love (the Trinitarian love) flowed out to us, even to death, death on the cross. It is this gift of faith that is proclaimed when we make that sign of the cross.

We baptize our children with the sign of the cross in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Those who are confirmed are marked with the sign of the cross; those who are sick are anointed with the sign of the cross; forgiveness of sins is offered with that same sign. The couple who are married are blessed with the sign of the cross. We receive Jesus Himself, Body and Blood as the sign of our faith and we begin each liturgy with that same glorious sign. It is a ‘sign of folly to the Greeks and a scandal to the Jews’ as St. Paul says. But to us, it is the sign of our salvation.

Whenever we make that sign of the cross in public, we profess our Catholic faith. People know us by that sign.  I can remember times when I was held back from making that sign. A priest friend of mine always makes a sign of blessing over the food, no matter where he is or what company he keeps. One of my resolutions is never let fear, being ashamed, feeling awkward keep me from signing myself. May it be your resolution as well? It is also important that when we wear that crucifix around our neck, whether it is gold, silver or the rosary, we need to reflect to whom we are witnessing. A person who wears the cross with reverence brings faith to people. A person who wears it and scandalizes others by his/her behavior is a witness to evil and hypocrisy in the world.

A good action this week is to become aware of our use of this sacred sign: the sign of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

May you feel that blessing more powerfully this week!

HIGH SCHOOL & JUNIOR HIGH NEWS

CAMPBELL & MARUGG HONORED WITH BISHOP’S CROSS

► The Bishop’s Cross is the highest distinction that a Catholic high school can bestow on a graduating young man and woman. This unmerited accolade is bestowed on the two students who possess the following qualities: Strong moral character, witness to the Christian faith and values of the Gospel, service to parish and school communities, and excellence in the study of Religion.

While faculty, staff and students have the opportunity to recommend names and give input for consideration, this recommendation is not determined by vote. While many may be deserving of the distinction, and there have been a number that were nominated and considered in this class, the Bishop’s Cross is bestowed on only young man and woman.

Fr. Weibl presented the Bishop’s Cross Award at graduation on Sunday, May 31 to Colin Campbell and Lindsey Marugg. Each where given a medal and took turns reading a special prayer.

Colin Campbell , the son of Dow and Susan Campbell, is a member of St. Michael Parish ( Findlay) and was a finalist in the Fireside Catholic Scholarship Program, the only recipient in the Toledo Diocese. He served as Student Council President, a member of National Honor Society, and participated in cross country, golf, track and choir. Colin was also active in the Men’s Discernment Group, band and the drama program.

Lindsey Marugg , daughter of Donald and Jill Marugg, is a member of Our Lady of Consolation Parish and valedictorian. She was a semi-finalist for the Toyota Scholarship, senior class president and a member of National Honor Society.
