PRINCIPAL’S NOTES
by Angela Joseph

HELLO TO ALL!

I hope you have got outside this past week and soaked up some sun. There is absolutely nothing better than a warm sunny day to lift our spirits before spring. I won’t miss the five foot snow drift that has been outside my house either!

I have some updates for you as we enter into our last quarter of the school year:

1. Calamity Days

We do have one more day built into our schedule for a calamity day (this will be the last year for that.) We have used five days so far. As a reminder, our make up days are June 1-4. Please do not make plans on these days, as finals would be given and students must be present on those days.

2. What do we offer to help our students academically?

We continue to make a concerted effort to assist students with their academics during and after school.

-- The teachers are volunteering each day to run an extra study table from 2:40-3:30 pm.

-- Mrs. Bowerman has been running a study table Monday –Thursday, from 2:40-3:30 pm, since the beginning of the school year to offer tutoring/intervention. Her study table also has a computer lab available for students, with another teacher available to assist if needed after school.

-- Some students have been invited to be at these tables and some are coming on their own, while others are coming to help tutor.

-- We encourage students to make appointments with the teacher directly if they are not doing well in their class to see them before, during, or after school.

-- We offer a math lab every other day with Mrs. Lininger during homeroom.

-- We offer a writing lab every other day with Mrs. Wedge during homeroom.

-- We offer a study table with a National Honor Society student to help tutor every day during homeroom.

-- We offer a quiet room during homeroom for students to work on homework, along with access to a computer lab to work on reports, research, or practice Spanish.

3. Registration

We are presently finishing up our registration process and will be following up personally with individuals to assist them in finishing the process. We hope our Priority Registration days went smoothly for you. There is much excitement about our new grants. If you have any feedback please feel free to email or call me. We are always looking for ways to improve the process or keep what is working.

4. Where’s Sr. Teresita?

She is currently three houses over from the school and still healing. If you have a chance, please visit or call, as she enjoys company. Please continue to keep her in your prayers. Unfortunately, for her and for our students, she could be out until late April. Knowing this, we have gone to plan B.

Mr. Henley will handle all lessons, assignments, grading and recording of the grades until Sister’s return. This will be easier for everyone involved. Mr. Henley is still consulting with Sr. T on assignments, as needed, and to help guide our students in their faith formation. We appreciate all Mr. Henley has done to help us out as well. He has a school email if you need to ask questions about your child’s progress academically or performance in the classroom: dan.henley@stwendelin.org.

Mrs. Koop has been busy recording service hours. This would be a good time to remind everyone that the year is quickly coming to an end and these hours need to be finished this year before they can start the next year. Seniors need to have theirs done before May 1 st. An updated report will be sent home with students during the week of March 15. Please ask to see it.

5. Golden Apple

Our teachers work hard to guide our students as they become young adults. I personally see them spending quite a few hours after school preparing lessons and helping students. Now is a good time to recognize a teacher that you feel has made a difference in your child’s life, or someone you feel goes above and beyond, in and out of the classroom.

To nominate a teacher, see the Golden Apple Nomination form enclosed in this mailing. We all know that positive words of encouragement can go a long way, no matter who we are, or what we do.

6. Congrats!

We have come to the end of our winter sports season and I want to congratulate our athletes.

The swimmers worked hard to rebuild the team this year led by senior Jen Scudder.

Our wrestlers achieved district level with senior Dillon Rickard and sophomore Chase Beam leading the way, and the JH team placed 4 th in the MAL.

The varsity boys’ basketball team overcame Arcadia with a comeback win to make it to sectional finals, and the 7 th grade boys’ team won the MAL championship!

Our varsity girls’ basketball team took us to district finals with some exciting games along the way. We heard the band entertain us, and the cheerleaders tumbled and lead the crowd. There were some fun moments in our student section, that always managed to make us chuckle.

Overall, everyone should feel good about their season. We learn from the past, live in the moment, and have hope for the future. We are proud of all they have accomplished!

United in Christ, Ms. Joseph
