ST. WENDELIN SCHOOL
MOVING FORWARD WITH FAITH AND POSSIBILITIES

ST. WENDELIN SCHOOL IS NOT CLOSING. We are facing the same economic situations as other schools and are being respectful stewards of our resources, in order to continue our long term viability. We are confident our faith life and academics will remain strong.

  • Combining the schools will offer greater opportunity, not only to save money, but also to enhance the “goodness, discipline and learning” we have held to be priorities for over a hundred years, and will continue in the future.
  • We are presently in Phase 1 of combining campuses. Our transition team and committees are working to make this move a smooth transition for all involved.
  • We will keep the identity of each grade intact and provide appropriate curriculums, activities, assemblies and space for each age level. The High School, as well as Junior High and Elementary, will continue to improve upon academic programs. The High School is adding more college course opportunities. The Elementary School will have new opportunities with mentoring/tutoring that have been planned already for next year.

AN INFORMATIONAL MEETING WILL BE HELD
ON TUESDAY, MAY 25 AT 7:30 PM.

All are welcome to this session in the North gym
at the Countyline St. campus.

Below is a letter mailed on Friday, May 7th, to all parishioners and school parents.

This message was shared with parish and school advisory groups on Thursday evening, and was welcomed as an exciting opportunity to strengthen Catholic education in the Fostoria and surrounding area. As was commented during that meeting, “We are blessed to have Catholic education in Fostoria. It doesn’t matter how many buildings there are.”

We ask for your prayers and your patience.
St. Wendelin Administration and Staff

May 2010

Dear Parishioners,

We are proud of the role our schools have served in preparing and educating our graduates. We have given them the moral and religious foundation that serves them the rest of their lives. We want to continue to provide that for our students. As we strive to do this, we are all aware of the economic stresses in our community. We, too, are facing serious financial challenges as we plan for the coming school year. And, to be good stewards of the resources that have been entrusted to us, we must make some changes that will ensure the future of St. Wendelin Catholic School.

First, we have notified our staff that we will attempt to streamline our budget by 20%. This is our short-range solution. Our long-range solution is to build up the annual appeal, so that it helps to stabilize our economic challenges.

Second, we have been encouraged by our consultant, T.J. Wallace, to look at our elementary and high school as one school system, rather than two separate schools. For a better education and for better stewardship, we believe that moving our elementary school children to the Countyline Street campus is the best solution. Be assured that appropriate means will be adopted to continue to meet the needs of all elementary, junior high and high school students, having separate entrances and spaces. By doing this, the possibilities for faith, academics and extracurriculars will be enhanced. For example:

  • The chapel in the high school will be available for prayer times and adoration for all students.
  • Every classroom will now have a Smart Board to enhance student learning.
  • By combining the MAC computer lab with the PC labs at the high school, all students will be better prepared technologically to meet today’s standards.
  • Elementary students will now have access to both gyms and the performing arts stage.
  • We will increase opportunities for the arts by allowing all of our students to use the tools available at the Countyline Street building (i.e kiln, supplies, etc.).
  • We will save at least $150,000 by not using the elementary building full-time (this building will continue to be used for religious education purposes).
  • Cafeterias will be able to be consolidated.
  • The music program will continue to be strengthened.
  • Sports programs will be energized by providing early opportunities for elementary students.
  • St. Wendelin’s safe, disciplined environment will continue to be a priority.
  • Specialized teachers in the high school will be available to the elementary students for greater enrichment.
  • High school students will be able to mentor and tutor younger students, and be involved in their spiritual formation.

We ask all of you to intensify your prayers for the success of our parish and school future. We recognize that there will be adjustments in achieving this vision and patience from all of us. As we continue to emphasize our stewardship efforts of time, talent and treasure, we encourage you to examine your own participation to see if you can increase your support of this effort. When everyone works together in a positive way, we will build a wonderful future for our students and our parish.

God bless our efforts.

Fr. Nicholas Weibl, Pastor

UNIVERSITY OF TOLEDO Foreign Language Academic Competition

February 23, 2010

Eleven St. Wendelin students got up early on Tuesday, February 23, to catch the 7:10 bus going to the University of Toledo. They were among 180 students from 13 schools who represented their language classes at the 15th annual Foreign Language Academic Competition:

French 3: Sarah Walas

French 2: Maddie Beeson and Alicia Shontz

Spanish 4: Cierra Holman and Samantha Holman

Spanish 3: Chloe Holman and Lexie Digby

Spanish 2: Olivia Crawford and Catrina Lang

Spanish 1: Anthony Halstead and Rodney Park

Their all-day efforts earned the following top awards:

Chloe Holman in Spanish 3:            3rd place in Culture

Anthony Halstead in Spanish 1:       2nd place in Vocabulary and Grammar

Olivia Crawford in Spanish 2:          2nd place in Culture

Anthony Halstead in Spanish 1:       1st place in Culture

Sarah Walas in French 3:                1st place in Vocabulary and Grammar

Maddie Beeson in French 2:           1st place in Culture

The combined scores of the 3 French students earned St. Wendelin the 3rd place trophy in French. This accomplishment is amazing because all the other French teams had 8 members. These students are seniors Maddie Beeson and Alicia Shontz in French 2 and junior Sarah Walas in French 3. Bravo!

Under Mr. Bowerman’s direction, students will use aviation knowledge to learn problem-solving skills to assist them in the future. In answer to a previous student inquiry, students will find out what it really takes to create scientific tools by helping to build a replica of the first airplane flight across the U.S. circa 1911.
