LISTENING. The student will:
- Follow simple
directions in Spanish.
- Comprehend meaning of
isolated vocabulary words, simple phrases, idiomatic expressions
- Comprehend words that
are elided in the manner of normal speech.
- Comprehend definitions
given orally by using previously learned vocabulary and cognates.
- Comprehend materials
presented by various native speakers at near-native speed
- Recognize differences
between formal and familiar ways of expression.
SPEAKING. The student will:
- Pronounce all vowel
diphthong and consonant sounds at an appropriate level.
- Pronounce (isolated)
words correctly and with appropriate stress.
- Use isolated vocabulary
in simple contexts.
- Maintain a conversation
with another person.
- Give oral directions
and explanations in Spanish.
- Retell, shifting from
first, second, and third person.
READING. The student will:
- Read and comprehend
sentences and paragraphs with structures ranging from simple to complex.
- Comprehend questions
related to the reading material.
- Read aloud in the
target language.
- Read and comprehend
directions, short reading selections, dialogues and poems.
WRITING. The student will:
- Use capitalization and
punctuation and diacritical marks (accents, tilde, etc.) correctly.
- Write correctly from
dictation materials.
- Compose answers to
questions in complete sentences.
- Create dialogues
utilizing appropriate pronoun and verb forms.
- Translate sentences
from Spanish to English and from English to Spanish.
- Compose sentences,
paragraphs, compositions and narratives about various topics.
GRAMMAR STRUCTURES. The student will learn the following
concepts:
- Conjugation
of all verbs studied in the following tenses: imperfect, future,
conditional
- Use of
passé compose and imperfect tenses
- Use of
tenses in si clauses
- Conjugation
of all verbs studied in present subjunctive
- Use of
present subjunctive after impersonal expressions and expressions of
feeling
- Use
verbal constructions using prepositions à and de followed by the
infinitive
- Construct
sentences using the forms of the comparative and superlative
- Direct
and indirect object pronouns
- Go
from questions using est-ce que to inverted form
- Join
two sentences to form a complex sentence using relative pronouns: qui,
que, où
- Time
expressions with depuis and ça fait
