HOMEWORK TIPS FOR PARENTS
ü
Provide a table or desk large enough for your
child to spread out their work in a quiet area of your home.
ü
The television set should not be on in the
background.
ü
Average time for homework is approximately 2
hours. If your child is spending more
than 3 hours a night, please contact his/her teachers.
ü
Be supportive of your child’s teachers; and when
possible, show an interest in your child’s homework. Ask your child what they are studying. If
their response is vague or they are confused, encourage them to see their teacher
for assistance.
ü
Occasionally helping your child with their
homework is fine. However, it is best if
you encourage your child to use their notes, text books or handouts to complete
their assignments. If your child seems
to need your assistance often, your child’s teacher would like to be informed.
ü
Assisting your child with drill work (for
example: flash cards) will help your child with their memorization.
ü
When possible, help your child set up a study
schedule for the week on Sunday evenings or decide in the morning before they
go to school when they will be doing
their homework in the evening.
ü
It is best to curtail any phone calls and cell
phone usage during homework time.
ü
When your child is using the internet for
homework, ask them to make sure their instant message is turned off.
ü
Communicate with your child’s teachers if they
are sick or if there has been a trauma that might affect their homework being
completed. Teachers are very willing to work with students, but they can’t do
so if they are not informed.
