COURSE TITLE: HONORS
ENGLISH
GRADE LEVEL: 10
TEACHER: MRS. ANN WEDGE
DESCRIPTION: Students will read quality
literature and identify various genres; develop the discipline necessary to
analyze and evaluate constructively and independently assigned literature.
The composition portion will stress writing as a
process involving prewriting, writing, and revision. Particular attention to writing to specific
audiences for a variety of purposes, organizing and developing ideas, achieving
coherence within paragraphs and within the essay as a whole, and to argue or
explain a point logically will be emphasized.
VOCABULARY: Ten
words a week.
ESSAYS: Students should
expect announced in-class papers. In
addition to these there will be out-of-class papers.
GRADING
ESSAYS: On the day that a
major paper is due, it will be turned in to me.
Your letter grade will be lowered one letter for each day it is
late. Weekends count as two days. Get the paper to school: there are few, if any, acceptable excuses for
later papers.
CLASS
DISCUSSION: Because it is absolutely
essential that the students further develop listening and speaking skills,
class discussion is an extremely important aspect of this course.
OBJECTIVE
TESTS: These frequently
precede an essay examination to aid students in organizing material before they
begin to write.
RESEARCH
PAPER: A 10-page research
paper will be written the third nine weeks.
Students will select a topic based upon my approval.
