High School Band
Course Name: High School Band
Grade Level: 9-12
Description:
High School Band is designed to
develop the skills learned in Jr. High Band to prepare students for scholarship
auditions and participation in college instrumental ensembles. Emphasis
is placed upon the elements of music, exposure to various styles and composers,
and improving technical ability through performances for athletic events,
concerts, and solo/ensemble contests.
Classroom
Rules:
- Be the first, never the last, to rehearsal.
- Always have the needed and required
rehearsal materials.
- Wear appropriate rehearsal attire – proper shoes, shorts, etc.
- Demonstrate desire, spirit, and enthusiasm for learning, working and contributing.
- Be one of those students who is always there and can always be counted on.
- Prepare and master your part of the performance in advance of rehearsal. Ask for help if necessary.
- Refrain from making comments or carrying on conversations during rehearsal. Talking is NOT conducive to productive rehearsals or superior bands.
- Stop immediately when a cut off is given or a marching move is completed.
- Exhibit enthusiasm for practice and understand the need for repetition.
- If you experience failure, analyze it and make a plan to improve and succeed the next
time.
- Turn work into play! Enjoy rehearsing whether it is hot, cold or rainy. Always remind
yourself: “The band will never be better than my ATTITUDE and contribution.”
- Be humble in your success, both as an individual and as a band. Being boastful will
quickly destroy your image. Demonstrate CLASS in all situations.
- ALWAYS give your 100%. Practice won’t always be easy, but don’t waste your time by giving less than your best.
Rehearsal
Guidelines:
- Required equipment: instrument in working order, ALL music (your own copy) and, most importantly, A PENCIL.
- Once rehearsal starts, talking WILL NOT be tolerated. Talking in rehearsal is not
representative of superior band programs. Raise your hand to ask a question.
- Rehearsal order will always be posted on the board. Please organize your music in that order before we begin.
- Sneakers must always be worn to practice, and laces must be properly tied. Sandals, flipflops, boots and/or bare feet are not allowed.
- Most importantly, there should be NO TALKING during outdoor rehearsals.
Take pride and work hard in every minute of the rehearsal so that we can take pride in
our final
product… the performance. There is no room for negative attitudes during
rehearsal.
Grading:
Grades will be determined by using a total
point system. Students will be responsible for concert attendance,
quizzes/tests, and for classroom participation. Students will earn a percentage
of the maximum points possible.
