ACTIVITIES GUIDE

This Activities Guide is available to acquaint yourself with the many different opportunities for student involvement in 7 th through 9 th grade extra-curricular and co-curricular activities, and sports at St. Wendelin Catholic School.

We have tried to provide current information on all of the sports teams, clubs, and service organizations within the school. The name of the coach or coordinator for each activity is listed, and you should feel free to contact them with specific questions about their organization.

At SWCS, it is possible to involve yourself in many different school activities, and we hope that you will find this a useful guide to the opportunities we have to offer.

 

Discernment Group

  • This activity is open to grades 9-12.
  • Meetings are held twice monthly, times and dates are set at the beginning of the school year.
  • Requirement for participation is openness to what God has in store for your life.
  • Includes adoration/prayer, dinner and a faith based discussion aimed at getting youth to ask the deeper questions of life.

Liturgical Ministry

  • This activity is open to grades 9-12.
  • Students are encouraged to share their time and talent by planning or participating in school liturgies, prayer services and other special faith-based events.

MAL Leadership

  • This activity is open to athletes, grades 8-11 .
  • Students should possess strong leadership qualities and participate in at least one interscholastic sport.
  • Each year 16 students participate in a one day leadership “camp” with the other MAL schools.

Athletes are invited to attend by the administration.

Mentoring

  • This activity is open to grades 9-12.
  • Requirements for participation are good academic standing and willing to help younger students.
  • Includes tutoring of K-12 students or just talking with them to see how they are doing.

National Honor Society

  • This activity is by invitation only, for grades
    11-12.
  • Requirements for participation include: 3.5 GPA or above; faculty recommendation based on scholarship, leadership, service and character.
  • Meetings are held during lunch on Mondays, every other week.

 Retreat Team

  • This activity is by faculty recommendation, for grades 10-12.
  • Requirements for participation are leadership skills and a strong faith life.
  • Includes planning and attending Kairos, junior and/or freshmen retreat.

Student Council

  • This activity is open to grades 7-12.
  • Meetings are held during lunch on Mondays, every other week.
  • Requirement for participation is being elected by your peers. Elections are held at the end of the school year for the following year.

Art Club

  • This activity is open to grades 9-12.
  • Meetings are held once a month.

Drama Club

  • This activity is open to grades 9-12.
  • The Drama Club puts on two plays each year, one in the fall and a musical in the spring.
  • Practices are for 6-8 weeks before the production date.
  • Requirements for participation include: dedication and promptness for rehearsals; participants must be willing to work and support other students.

International Club

  • This activity is open to grades 9-12.
  • Meetings are held during homeroom.
  • No Requirements for participation.
  • Student led discussions of different cultures and foods brought in by students are sampled.

Model United Nations

  • This activity is open to grades 9-12.
  • Meetings are held during homeroom the 2 nd and 4 th Friday of the month.
  • Students assume the roles of ambassadors to the United Nations and are provided with an agenda comprised of items also being debated by the real United Nations in New York. There is a fee to participate in the conference.
  • Students may earn ½ credit for full participation.

Quiz Bowl

  • This activity is open to grades 9-12 and takes place in the fall and winter.
  • Practices are held during homeroom, usually once a week during season.
  • Requirements for participation include: an academic letter from the previous school year or providing proof of at least “B” average.

Robotics Club

  • This activity is open to grades 7-12.
  • Meetings are held on even days during lunch and homeroom.
  • Students will work with LEGO equipment, Vernier probes, and LEGO software to build project robots for various science labs.
  • Students may also be a part of the robotics team which competes in March at Wright State University.

Students For Life

  • This activity is open to grades 7-12.
  • Meetings are held monthly during lunch and homeroom.
  • The mission is to motivate students to build a culture that respects the dignity of every human person and encourages them to become involved in pro-life activities within the wider community.

Chamber Choir

  • This class is open to students in grades 9-12 who are members of Concert Choir.
  • Normal rehearsals are held during homeroom with other rehearsals outside of school, as needed.
  • Chamber Choir will learn more music of a larger variety.
  • Students earn ¼ credit per year of enrollment.

Concert Choir

  • This class is open to grades 9-12.
  • Rehearsals are held during homeroom with other rehearsals outside of school, as needed.
  • Students learn choral singing, music of different styles and time periods, and musicianship.
  • Students earn ½ credit per year of enrollment.

Concert Band

  • This activity is open to grades 9-12.
  • Requirement for participation: Proper training in a band instrument, preferably starting in 5 th or 6 th grade. All other participants must be approved by the director.

  • This activity is open to boys, grades 9-12 and takes place during the spring.
  • Practices are held after school
  • This activity conflicts with participation in Track and Field.

Basketball - boys

  • This activity is open to grades 7-12 and takes place in the winter.
  • Practices are held after school, with games scheduled during the week and on Saturdays.
  • Open gyms run throughout the summer.
  • Requirements include basic basketball skills for participation.
  • This activity conflicts with participation in Wrestling.

Basketball - girls

  • This activity is open to grades 7-12 and takes place in the winter.
  • Practices are held after school, with games scheduled during the week and on Saturdays.
  • Open gyms are available in the summer to improve your skills.
  • Requirements include basic basketball skills, and the ability to think and react quickly.
  • This activity conflicts with participation in Basketball Cheerleading.

Cheerleading

  • This activity is open to grades 7-12 and the season runs from summer through the winter.
  • Practices are held after school.
  • Requirements include participation in tryouts and a cheerleading clinic.
  • This activity conflicts with participation in Basketball, Cross Country and Volleyball.

Cross Country

  • This activity is open to grades 7-12 and takes place in the fall.
  • Practices are held after school, with meets scheduled during the week and on the weekend.
  • This activity conflicts with participation in Football, Golf and Volleyball.
  • Requirements for participation include good work habits, perseverance and self-discipline.

Football

  • This activity is open to grades 7-12 and takes place during the fall.
  • Practices are held after school and games are Friday or Saturday.
  • Requirements include participation in weightlifting and practices; A desire to play football.
  • This activity conflicts with participation in Cross Country, Golf and Marching Band.

Golf

  • This activity is open to grades 9-12 and takes place in the fall.
  • Practices are held after school and on Saturdays, with matches and tournaments scheduled during the week and on the weekend.
  • This activity conflicts with participation in Football, Golf and Volleyball.
  • Requirements for participation include your own set of clubs and personal equipment and transportation to practices.

Softball

  • This activity is open to girls, grades 9-12 and takes place in the spring.
  • Practices are held after school.
  • This activity conflicts with participation in Track and Field.

Swimming

  • This activity is open to grades 9-12 with a limited schedule but the opportunity to participate in the OHSAA tournament. 
  • Conflicts with Basketball and Wrestling.
  • Practice times vary.

Track & Field

  • This activity is open to grades 7-12 and takes place in the spring.
  • Practices are held after school at Fostoria stadium’s all-weather track. Meets are scheduled during the week and on the weekend.
  • This activity conflicts with participation in Baseball and Softball.
  • Requirements for participation include good work habits, desire to learn and self-discipline.

Volleyball

  • This activity is open to girls, grades 7-12 and takes place in the fall.
  • Practices are held after school, with games scheduled during the week and on the weekend.
  • This activity conflicts with participation in Cheerleading, Football and Golf.
  • Requirements for participation include basic volleyball skills, and the ability to jump and move quickly.

Wrestling

  • This activity is open to boys, grades 7-12 and takes place during the winter.
  • Practices are held after school and meets are scheduled during the week and on weekends.
  • Requirements include a desire to wrestle, have fun and learn to win.
  • This activity conflicts with participation in Basketball.

Marching Band

  • This activity is open to grades 9-12 and takes place during the fall football season.
  • Practices are held on Wednesday evenings, and performances are on the weekends.
  • Requirements for participation include being registered for 8 th period Band and attendance to band camp for one full week in July (including Flag Corp and twirlers); Beginners are welcome at the discretion of the director.

Students, who would like to learn how to play an instrument, are encouraged to contact Mr. Matt Keasal to arrange for lessons. 

Pep Band

  • This activity is open to grades 9-12 and takes place during basketball season.
  • One music rehearsal is held on a Wednesday evening in November. The Pep Band also rehearses during the 3 rd quarter of the JV boys’ basketball home game.
  • This activity conflicts with participation in boys’ varsity basketball (JV players are welcome to participate.)

Jazz Ensemble

  • This activity is open to grades 9-12 and takes place during the winter and spring.
  • Practices are to be announced.
  • Requirements for participation are: approval of the Band Director, possible audition.
  • ¼ credit is given for each year of participation.
